Currently, Vietnam’s tourism industry is growing and there are many tourists who want to come to Vietnam for entertainment as well as investment and doing business. Along with documents and procedures for submitting visas, we also need to pay attention to the visa issuance period and visa validity. Please note: 

I/ Issuance of visas for foreigners

A foreigner who would love to enter Vietnam has to apply for visas here. The procedures to apply for a visa are different depending on their purposes and length of stay in Vietnam, here are 3 ways to apply for a visa as follows:

1. Vietnam’s e-Visa?    

Vietnam’s e-Visa is one of several visa types offered by the Vietnam Immigration Department to foreigners entering the country. E-Visa is valid for 30 days, the payment and delivery of the visa are done entirely online with a single entry only. It requires three full working days to process. As of July 2020, Vietnam’s e-Visa is available to nationals of 80 countries. With e-visa, travelers just need to print out the file offered by Vietnam Immigration Department to use.

2. Approval letter on arrival

An approval letter on arrival is issued by the Vietnam Immigration Department to foreigners entering the country individually or in groups with single or multiple entries.

3. Apply for a visa on arrival at the embassy

This is the most popular way to apply for a visa, and surely there are many people willing to do it in Vietnam. To do it, they just need to get to the Vietnamese Embassy in their countries to apply for a Vietnam visa on arrival.

In addition, we can also apply for a visa at other locations:

Immigration Department.

Embassy/Consulate of Vietnam Abroad.

International airports in Vietnam such as Tan Son Nhat, and Noi Bai.

Provincial Security Immigration Management Office.

II/ Procedures to apply for a visa

If you choose the 3rd way to apply for a visa, please keep in mind the following order to make the visa application more convenient.

Step 1: Scope of regulation and subjects of application

Documents that need to be prepared inside the visa application include:

Passport of the applicant, please ensure that the passport is valid for at least 6 months from the dates of entry.

A work permit is required except for cases that do not need to apply for a work permit as follows: Investor, Project Manager, Chief of the representative office of NGO, a foreign lawyer licensed to practice in Vietnam. Foreign workers who want to apply for a visa with a validity of 3 months or more.

Legal documents of businesses or organizations that guarantee outsiders, including a copy of the business registration certificate. Copy of tax code registration, signature and seal registration, and copy of seal sample certificate.

Application form for issuance, supplementation, amendment of visa, and extension of temporary residence card (Form NA5).

Step 2: Submit your visa application

You will need to apply for your visa at the Immigration Department. The officers will then investigate the legality and content of the file before going to the conclusion.

If the application is complete and valid, it will be accepted to process. Then, you are given a receipt and a date for the results that will be returned.

 If your visa application is not valid yet, you will be guided to complete the application.

Step 3: Get visa result

The person who comes to receive the results will have to show the officer his/her receipt along with an identity card or passport in order to check the visa result. If the result comes out, that person is asked to come and receive the results after paying the fee and signing for it. 

III. How long does visa issuance take

Besides the documents and procedures, we also need to pay attention to the visa issue date, visa expiration date, and symbols of Vietnam visa types.

The purpose of the visit

 Below are symbols of Vietnam visa types categorized in the purpose of visit for foreigners who want to apply for a Vietnam visa should equip themselves in order to avoid unnecessary complications.

 

  • SQ visa: issued for one-month single and multiple entry visas.
  • HN, DL visa: issued for a three-month single and multiple entry visas.
  • VR visa: issued for not over 6 months.
  • NG1, NG2, NG3, NG4, LV1, LV2, DN, NN1, NN2, NN3, DH, PV1, PV2, and TT visa: issued for not over 12 months.
  • LD visa: issued for not over  2 years.
  • DT visa: issued for not over 5 years.
  • If a visa is expired, it is considered to get renewed.
  • Visa validity is shorter than a passport and travel documents validity is at least 30 days.

Any foreigners who temporarily reside in Vietnam should keep in mind that their visa validity is equal to their temporary stay here. Please note that:

The duration of temporary residence is equal to the duration of the visa. In the case of a visa with the DL symbol for a duration of more than 30 days, a temporary residence permit will be granted for 30 days and will be considered for an extension of temporary residence according to regulations.

For foreigners who are granted visa exemption certificates according to international treaties to which Vietnam is a contracting party. The temporary residence period will be granted according to the provisions of international treaties. If an international treaty does not stipulate a temporary residence period, a temporary residence permit of 30 days will be granted.

Citizens of countries that are unilaterally exempted from visas by Vietnam, will be granted temporary residence for 15 days.
